Most of the Borough lies inside the Peak District National Park on the north-west tip of Derbyshire. The area’s outstanding scenery means that tourism is an important part of the local economy.
The historic spa town of Buxton lies within the borough and many of the settlements west of Buxton are within commuting distance of the Manchester conurbation.
The High Peak Borough Council website has sections on the main towns of Buxton, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Glossop, New Mills and Whaley Bridge, and on the regeneration of High Peak villages.
Currently the boundaries of the borough and the parliamentary constituency of High Peak differ somewhat in the south-east, though this will change at the next election. The MP for High Peak is Tom Levitt.
The population is around 91,000.
