The area's three towns are Leek, Cheadle, and Biddulph.
The principal industries are agriculture, fashion and tourism. Attractions include the National Trust property Biddulph Grange, the Alton Towers theme-park, and the annual Leek Arts Festival.
As suggested by the regional name, the terrain is mostly moorland with forests and lakes stretching out across the plains. Some of the higher moorland has been largely abandoned for farming.
The Staffordshire Moorlands District Council is based in Leek.
